Luquillo Monarch Butterfly Project

Stay & Help Save Monarchs

A stay at Sonsoleá is more than just a getaway—it’s a chance to make a difference. Monarch butterflies are an essential part of Luquillo’s ecosystem, but their numbers are declining. At Sonsolea’s Secret Garden, we’re creating a sanctuary to help them thrive. Stay with us, experience the beauty of these butterflies up close, and be part of the conservation efforts.

Why Monarch's Matter in Luquillo

Monarch butterflies are more than just a beautiful sight—they’re key pollinators that connect Sonsolea’s tropical garden to the Corredor Ecológico del Noreste and El Yunque rainforest. But habitat loss and climate change threaten their migration patterns. Through our conservation efforts, we’re helping restore their natural habitat right here in Luquillo’s Downtown.

Every guest at Sonsoleá plays a role in butterfly conservation. Here’s how you can help:

The Phases of the Luquillo Monarch Butterfly Project

Sonsolea’s Monarch Butterfly Project is a step-by-step initiative to protect, grow, and celebrate the monarch population in Luquillo. Here’s how we’re making it happen:

Phase 1: Mapping & Exploration

Identify monarch butterfly host plants on the Luquillo Tourist Map, allowing visitors to witness the butterfly cycle as it naturally unfolds downtown.

Create the Explorer Kit
—an interactive adventure that sparks kids’ curiosity and turns them into little scientists.

Phase 2: The Secret Garden Sanctuary

Transform the Secret Garden into a butterfly sanctuary.

Rescue caterpillars, nurture them, and release butterflies back into the wild.

Phase 3: Growing Monarch-Friendly Plants

Provide free algodones de seda plants to guests, locals, and businesses.

Help anyone interested grow their own butterfly-friendly space.

Phase 4: Community & Business Involvement

Educate the community on monarch conservation.

Encourage neighbors and businesses to plant host plants and create butterfly-friendly micro-habitats across Luquillo's Downtown.

Join the Movement - Spread the Monarch Missio

Even if you’re not visiting Luquillo soon, you can still be part of the mission. Follow our journey, support conservation, and help us protect these incredible butterflies.
